Chimney Inspection Levels Explained: 1, 2, and 3

September 30, 2026 • 1 min read

Chimney inspections are grouped into three levels by the National Fire Protection Association, and the level you need depends on your situation — not just how old your chimney is.

Level 1

A Level 1 inspection covers the readily accessible portions of the chimney, both inside and outside the home. It’s the standard inspection for a chimney that’s had regular use and maintenance with no known problems.

Level 2

A Level 2 inspection is more thorough and includes a camera scan of the flue interior. It’s typically required when you’re buying or selling a home, after a chimney fire, after an event like an earthquake, or if you’re changing the type of fuel you burn.

Level 3

A Level 3 inspection is the most invasive, and may involve removing components of the chimney or nearby structure to access concealed areas. It’s reserved for situations where a serious hazard is suspected and can’t be evaluated any other way.
